Registration Information

Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2017 begins on June 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

September 30

Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15*

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Lab coats and stethoscopes included. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201 (Please do not register if you have not participated in Vet Tech 101; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Animal Care Trainee
Ages 8-10 (New Age Limit!)

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the unique responsibility of being an animal caretaker. Children will learn about the needs of APEC’s animals, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. Craft included. Limited to 8 participants.

*Because participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee, students over the age of 10 may be able to take Animal Care Trainee under special circumstances (Contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Fall Bird Walk for Beginners
Ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult)

Walk through APEC’s trails, accompanied by a member of Queens County Bird Club. Try to spot our various species of birds – both the year-round residents and the multitudes of warblers migrating through at this time. Listen for their songs. Learn to use binoculars and a field guide. Wear hiking shoes, sneakers, or other closed-toe shoes that you won’t mind getting muddy. Bring binoculars if you have them.. Although this walk is free, pre-registration is required as spots are limited. This walk will cover some rough terrain and is not suitable for persons with limited mobility. Limited to 20 participants

Think Tank: Superhero Lightning Bolts
Ages 7-9

How many different ways can you use the force of static electricity? It’s going to be a hair-raising, Flash Lightning experience.

Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled hands on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentations. Watch things bubble, pop, move, and fizz. Change, spread, grow and twist. Join us in answering the question “What happens if....” Limited to 8 participants.

Star Gazing Wonders – Astronomy Night
Adults, children ages 9 and up

Seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich will lead each of these interactive astronomy programs. Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, fun and games followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

October 14 Sky Highlights
The main sky highlights for this month is to locate the summer triangle of Deneb, Vega, and Altair. Inside the constellation Cygnus is the Northern Cross with the most beautiful double star in the northern hemisphere Albeireo. See the Great Square of Pegasus where the first exo-planet was discovered, and the Andromeda galaxy. We should be able to see the ringed planet Saturn in the southwest skies as well

Nutrition Detective
Ages 6-8 (Parent welcomed to stay) and Ages 9-13 (Drop Off)

Join Holistic Health Coach Yessie Saheed in an interactive lesson on healthy food choices and alternatives that are also delicious. Children will receive the tools they need to be self-aware and informed on healthy living all while trying and preparing healthy treats. This class will be sure to grab your child’s attention and awaken their taste buds to new healthy possibilities. Limited to 12 participants.

Have you ever been curious about how ancient people made paint? Join us as we learn how to harvest paints from nature. Participants will make our own paint using squash, berries, and roots then get creative! We’ll walk to the trails finding plants used as inks, then spend some time practicing painting what we see with natural landscapes and live animals as our muses. Yeeeeha!! This year we’ll spend an evening with “Cowboy Curly at the Campfire”. Enjoy quality family time at APEC while being drawn in to bedtime stories from our professional interactive storyteller. Wear you pajamas, bring your sleeping bag, and camp out with us. Work out your wiggles with a pre-story activity. Then tip-toe to the story room to get cozy, snuggle down and prepare to activate your imagination. Bedtime snack included. Pre-registration required. Vet Tech 101
Ages 10-13*

Come join us to learn about animal health basics. During the class we will practice conducting animal check-ups, handling live animals, and studying animal anatomy. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keepings some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Pocket magnifiers included. Come join us for an action packed foraging adventure. We’ll head onto the trails on a photo scavenger hunt. Back inside participants will make treats for themselves and the local wildlife. We’ll take a foraging tour, smelling our way through the forest then meet a very furry relative of some of the most successful foragers on the planet. Snack included. Limited to 8 participants.

Also, we hope to see the beautiful open cluster the Plieades or the "seven sisters". We will observe open star clusters in the constellation Auriga, and observe the sun like star Capella as well.

Thanksgiving is customarily a time to give thanks for the harvest and appreciate everything we are blessed with. With this in mind, our Young Chefs will "shop" for goods in our “APEC” market and together, create Thanksgiving baskets filled with groceries for the less fortunate to enjoy over the holidays. Young Chefs will also learn how to cook fresh zucchini pancakes and garlic bread to enjoy with a nice cup of warm apple cider! All materials included. Limited to 8 participants. Sunday Brunch Terrarium Class by luludi living art
Adults and Teens

Creating a mini living world is fun AND healthy! In this one-hour workshop we provide the glass, the lush succulents or air plants, soil, an array of mosses and tons of decorative pebbles and items to choose from. We provide fun, hands-on guidance and vision boards to get everyone inspired. At the end we show everyone how to easily care for their new terrariums. Limited to 15 participants. What do squirrels do to get ready for winter? Learn some interesting facts and squirrels in this fun class. Enjoy a squirrel story, pet live chinchilla (a cute rodent just like squirrels) make a craft, and walk APEC’s forest trail in search of squirrels, dreys and acorns.

Keep Calm and Practice Yoga
Ages: 14 years old – adults

Book your spot and bring your mat! Certified master yoga instructor Mike Mancini will lead these hour long yoga sessions. Using an adaptable approach suitable for beginners to experienced students, yoga promotes good health through breath and movement. Multiple sessions are encouraged. Limited to 8 participants.

Star Gazing Wonders – Astronomy Night

Winter Solstice Star Celebration
Adults, children ages 9 and up

Seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich will lead each of these interactive astronomy programs. Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, fun and games followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

December 16 Sky Highlights

The main sky highlights for this month would be observing the constellation Orion consisting of the red giant star Betelgeuse and blue giant Rigel. Also, we will see the Great Orion Nebula. We will locate the open cluster of the Plieades and observe the faint Andromeda galaxy. This month we will run our winter solstice star party as well. Everyone is invited to bring their telescopes and binoculars as we serve snacks, refreshments, and play games as well. It is a fun and rewarding night for all to enjoy.

Alley ECOclub: Winter Wilderness Skills
Ages 8-12

Imagine a plane crashing in the tundra… amazingly you survive the crash, but can you survive the tundra? Come join us to learn essential survivals skills like helpful and harmful plant identification, water purification, and shelter building. Participants will learn techniques used by Native Americans to live off of the land we’re on today, and practice those skills themselves. Snack included. Limited to 8 participants.

How do local animals survive the harsh winter weather? Learn about physical and behavioral adaptations of forest mammals, birds and reptiles. Interactive activities, science-themed children’s literature and a craft will be included in each class. Ages 3 to 5 limited to 8 participants. Ages 6-7 limited to 12 participants.

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the unique job of an animal caretaker. Children will learn about the needs of APEC’s animals, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. DIY pocket animal and wintertime bird feeder included. Kidz Kitchen - Two Turtle Yums
Ages 6-7

...and a partridge in a pair tree. Turtles and doves are the inspiration for this holiday treat. Fruits and cheeses will be the star ingredients for healthy fun snacks to bring in the New Year. 2018 here we come!

For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a young chef. Here’s something just for you. APEC Kidz will have fun learning about an animal, and then help make a delicious snack to compliment what they’ve learned. All materials included. Limited to 8 participants.
