Registration Information

Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2017 begins on June 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

Nutty Squirrels
Age 3- 4 (parent participation)
Ages 5 – 6 (drop-off class)

What do squirrels do to get ready for winter? Learn some interesting facts and squirrels in this fun class. Enjoy a squirrel story, pet live chinchilla (a cute rodent just like squirrels) make a craft, and walk APEC’s forest trail in search of squirrels, dreys and acorns.

Keep Calm and Practice Yoga
Ages: 14 years old – adults

Book your spot and bring your mat! Certified master yoga instructor Mike Mancini will lead these hour long yoga sessions. Using an adaptable approach suitable for beginners to experienced students, yoga promotes good health through breath and movement. Multiple sessions are encouraged. Limited to 8 participants.

Star Gazing Wonders – Astronomy Night

Winter Solstice Star Celebration
Adults, children ages 9 and up

Seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich will lead each of these interactive astronomy programs. Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, fun and games followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

December 16 Sky Highlights

The main sky highlights for this month would be observing the constellation Orion consisting of the red giant star Betelgeuse and blue giant Rigel. Also, we will see the Great Orion Nebula. We will locate the open cluster of the Plieades and observe the faint Andromeda galaxy. This month we will run our winter solstice star party as well. Everyone is invited to bring their telescopes and binoculars as we serve snacks, refreshments, and play games as well. It is a fun and rewarding night for all to enjoy.

Ages 8-12

Imagine a plane crashing in the tundra… amazingly you survive the crash, but can you survive the tundra? Come join us to learn essential survivals skills like helpful and harmful plant identification, water purification, and shelter building. Participants will learn techniques used by Native Americans to live off of the land we’re on today, and practice those skills themselves. Snack included. Limited to 8 participants.

How do local animals survive the harsh winter weather? Learn about physical and behavioral adaptations of forest mammals, birds and reptiles. Animal Care Club

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the unique job of an animal caretaker. Every wonder why ice floats in a glass instead of sinking to the bottom? Want to learn why freezing water becomes snow, sleet, ice, or hail? Come join us to learn about ice and the extreme organisms that can survive its chilling effects! Young discoverers will be doing some cool science experiments with dry ice. We will learn about extremophiles like lichens and mosses. Participants will take home their own DIY moss gardens. Limited to 8 participants.

Stargazing Wonders – Astronomy Night
Adults, children ages 9 and up

One of the longest running astronomy programs in the city led by seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 15 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult). Sky Highlights for January 20 The constellation Orion rules the January night skies with the two giant stars Betelgeuse, and Rigel. Also we will observe the Orion nebula which is the birthplace of stars. We will see the winter triangle of stars, and the beautiful star cluster the Pliedes or seven sisters. The moon will show its crescent phase as well.

Vet Tech 101
Ages 10-13*

Come join us to learn about animal health basics. During the class we will practice conducting animal check-ups, handling live animals, and studying animal anatomy. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keepings some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Pocket magnifiers included. Limited to 6 participants.

*Because participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, students over the age of 13 may be able to take Vet Tech 101 under special circumstances (Contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Advanced Animal Care Trainee
Ages 10-12

Learn more about animal needs that go beyond water, food, and a clean shelter. Help care for our animals and all their quirks by learning how to bath them, clip their nails, clean their ears, moisturize them, and supplement their diets. Study species behavior to better connect you to other animals. APEC trading card included. Winter Bird Walk for Beginners
Ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult)

Walk around Oakland Lake accompanied by Nancy Tognan of the Queens County Bird Club to look for ducks, coots, grebes, swans, geese and more. Oakland Lake never complete freezes over because of all of the spring water constantly feeding it, so it becomes a freshwater duck magnet when other ponds are frozen. Meet at APEC at 9:30 for a brief orientation; learn to use binoculars and a field guide. Bring binoculars if you have them. Although this walk is free, pre-registration is required as space is limited. Limited to 20 participants.

Sweet Treats for the Animals

Celebrate Valentine’s Day by making tasty treats for APEC’s animals. After making something yummy for the rabbits and birds, children will make a snack of their own to enjoy together. Live animal guests, a short nature walk and a fun children’s book will be part of the program. Limited to 8 participants per class.

Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15**

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Stethoscopes and bandages included. Limited to 6 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201 (Please do not register if you have not participated in Vet Tech 101; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Animal Care and Science Practicum
Ages 14-18

Come gain key animal care and science skills from a licensed Veterinarian Technician. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques to perform teddy bear surgeries and in-depth animal examinations. We’ll trouble shoot various animal emergencies and conditions, going beyond the standard check-up to emergency care. Whether you are an aspiring Doctor, Nurse, Vet, or Vet Tech, or you just love animals and science, you will leave this program with many practical animal care know-hows. Limited to 10 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in any prior Animal Care and Science program (Animal Care Trainee, Advanced Animal Care Trainee, Vet Tech 101, or Vet Tech 201) at APEC or the volunteer program is required to qualify for the Animal Care and Science Practicum (Please do not register if you have not participated in one or more of these programs; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Think Tank – Go-Bot Races – *Special Program for Winter Recess*
Ages 7-10

Can you make a moving vehicle that uses a natural energy source? We will try our hand at it here, but if you’re up for the challenge, make one at home prior and bring it in to join the race. (Parental help ok ) Limited to 12 participants. Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled hands on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentations. Watch things bubble, pop, move, and fizz. Hidden in spaces too small to see are worlds within worlds of biological life. Come learn about the tool that allows us to see these worlds. The microscope! Who invented it? What do we use it for? Footprints in the Snow
Ages 5-6 (drop-off)

Although animals are hard to see in winter, footprints in the snow (and mud) help us know they are still active. Learn how to identify tracks from local animals and take a nature walk in search of animal clues like footprints and scat. Participants will also share a book, meet live animals and make an Animal Tracks mini-book to take home. Limited to 8 participants.
