Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2016
(through December) is ongoing.

Registration for Winter 2017
(January - March 2017) opens online on
Tuesday, December 6
at 1:00 pm

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

Melt Away the Winter Blues Paint Afternoon
Adults, children ages 8 and up

Join artistic entertainer, Masa Kitani, from Creative Scene, as she takes you step by step through the process of creating this beautiful winter scene on canvas. Winter Bird Walk for Beginners
Ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult)

Walk around Oakland Lake accompanied by Nancy Tognan of the Queens County Bird Club to look for ducks, coots, grebes, swans, geese and more. Oakland Lake never complete freezes due to all of the spring water that constantly feeds into it. As a result, it becomes a freshwater duck magnet when other ponds are frozen. Meet at APEC at 9:30 for a brief orientation; learn to use binoculars and a field guide. Bring binoculars if you have them. Although this walk is free, pre-registration is required as space is limited. Limited to 20 participants.

Vet Tech 201
Age

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Lab coats and stethoscopes included. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants.

**Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201 (Please do not register if you have not participated in Vet Tech 101; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

APEC Adventure Time: Playing with Pinwheels
Ages 18-36 months (parent participation)

Experiment with wind and take home a pinwheel to play with at home. Toddlers and parents/caregivers enjoy some special time together as they socialize with other youngsters are learn about nature. Each class focuses on a different science theme and includes live animal guests, art projects, trail walks, stories and more. Limited to 8 participants. No siblings except babies staying in infant seats.

Vet Tech 101
Ages 10-13*

All animals need care that goes beyond basics like food and water. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keepings some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants.

*Because participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, students over the age of 13 may be able to take Vet Tech 101 under special circumstances (Contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Toddler Tales - Like a Windy Day

There are layers of knowledge hidden in the gameplay of our favorite video games. Come join us to learn about the natural science of games like Pokémon and Minecraft . Think Tank: It’s Explosive
Ages 7-9

What happens when you mix baking soda with different things? Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled hands on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentations. Watch things bubble, pop, move, and fizz. Learn about the amazing life cycle of butterflies with colorful photos, an engaging book and live specimens! Compare butterfly anatomy with an assortment of other insect guests. Take a nature walk looking for local butterflies like the Painted Lady Butterfly, Cabbage White Butterfly and Monarchs that flutter through our park! We all know what April showers bring, but how much do you really know about flowers? Come learn about the life of flowering plants from seed to sprout, to tree or herb. Ages 5-7

Learn about the amazing life cycle of butterflies with colorful photos, an engaging book and live specimens! Compare butterfly anatomy with an assortment of other insect guests. Take a nature walk looking for local butterflies like the Painted Lady Butterfly, Cabbage White Butterfly and Monarchs that flutter through our park! Think Tank: It’s aMAZEing
Ages 7-9

Build a MAZE with road blocks and breaks that could challenge any living species. Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled hands on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentations. Watch things bubble, pop, move, and fizz. Change, spread, grow and twist. Join us in answering the question “What happens if....” Limited to 8 participants.

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the unique job of an animal caretaker. From wildlife to pets, all animals have needs that must be cared for. Participants will learn about the needs of APEC’s animals, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. Students will earn an animal care certificate. Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15*

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Lab coats and stethoscopes included. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201 (Please do not register if you have not participated in Vet Tech 101; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

APEC Adventure Time: Buzzing Bees
Ages 18-36 months (parent participation)

Explore nature’s candymakers by tasting honey and playing a bee beanbag toss game. Toddlers and caregivers enjoy some special time together as they socialize with other youngsters and learn about nature. Each class focuses on a different science theme and includes live animal guests, art projects, trail walks, stories and more. Limited to 8 participants with ONE adult per child. No siblings except babies staying in infant seats.

Spring Bird Walk for Beginners
Adults, children ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult)

Walk through APEC’s trails, accompanied by a member of Queens County Bird Club. Try to spot our various species of birds – both the year-round residents and the multitudes of warblers migrating through at this time. Listen for their spring songs. Learn to use binoculars and a field guide. Wear long pants, due to poison ivy. Wear hiking shoes, sneakers, or other closed-toe shoes that you won’t mind getting muddy. Bring binoculars if you have them. Although this walk is free, pre-registration is required as spots are limited. This walk will cover some rough terrain and is not suitable for persons with limited mobility. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Limited to 20 participants.

Ever play in the mud when you were little? Come prepared to dig around with scientific tools like field guides, magnifying loops, and insect viewers in hand. We’ll identify the bugs hiding just below the forest floor by observing their color, size, and shape. Together, ECOclub members will take a closer look under the microscope at the hidden details of insect anatomy. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be bug sized? It’s time for metamorphosis in the kitchen. We’re making cookie crumble caterpillars that crawl and butterfly cinnamon buns that will just fly out of here and into APEC Kidz’ bellies. For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a young chef. Here’s something just for you. Vet Tech 101
Ages 10-13*

All animals need care that goes beyond basics like food and water. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keepings some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants. *Because participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, students over the age of 13 may be able to take Vet Tech 101 under special circumstances (Contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).
