Registration Information

Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2017 begins on June 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

Young Chefs Give Thanks Once Again!
Ages 8 – 12

Thanksgiving is customarily a time to give thanks for the harvest and appreciate everything we are blessed with. With this in mind, our Young Chefs will "shop" for goods in our “APEC” market and together, create Thanksgiving baskets filled with groceries for the less fortunate to enjoy over the holidays. Young Chefs will also learn how to cook fresh zucchini pancakes and garlic bread to enjoy with a nice cup of warm apple cider! All materials included. Limited to 8 participants. (Cost of baskets to be donated included in class fee.)

Keep Calm and Practice Yoga
Ages: 14 years old – adults

Thanksgiving Feel Good – Do Good Session! Bring a non-perishable food item to your yoga session. APEC Young Chefs will be making up Thanksgiving Baskets that afternoon for needy families with the donations collected, to be distributed for Thanksgiving.

Book your spot and bring your mat! Certified master yoga instructor Mike Mancini will lead these hour long yoga sessions. Toddler Tales: Apples and Pumpkins

Little Naturalist Storytime: Owl Babies
Ages 5 – 6 (drop-off class)

What will happen if Mama Owl doesn’t return to the nest? What will the owl babies do? Take a journey with the little old lady through the woods and see what is trying to scare her. Come enter the wonderful world of nature. We will read an enchanting book about different animal friends. Class will include a story, time with our animals, a craft and nature walk. Limited to 12 participants.

Sunday Brunch Terrarium Class by luludi living art
Adults and Teens

Creating a mini living world is fun AND healthy! In this one-hour workshop we provide the glass, the lush succulents or air plants, soil, an array of mosses and tons of decorative pebbles and items to choose from. We provide fun, hands-on guidance and vision boards to get everyone inspired. At the end we show everyone how to easily care for their new terrariums. Limited to 15 participants. Class includes light brunch and coffee/tea.

Kidz Kitchen - Squaklicious Dishes
Ages 6-7

Who are the noisiest animals at APEC? Timon and Pumba of course. But did you know their eggs are a fine delicacy? Kidz will create a fine dining experience using quail eggs. They’ll try their hand at quail egg quiche and a beautiful quail egg inspired summer salad. Parents you might want to check out the health benefits of quail eggs. You’ll be surprised.

For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a young chef. Here’s something just for you. APEC Kidz will have fun learning about an animal, and then help make a delicious snack to compliment what they’ve learned. All materials included. Limited to 8 participants.

Advanced Animal Care Trainee
Ages 10-12

Learn more about animal needs that go beyond water, food, and a clean shelter. Help care for our animals and all their quirks by learning how to bath them, clip their nails, clean their ears, moisturize them, and supplement their diets. Study species behavior to better connect you to other animals. APEC trading card included. Limited to 8 participants.

**Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee (Please do not register if you have not participated in Animal Care Trainee; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15**

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Stethoscopes and bandages included. Limited to 6 participants.

APEC Adventure Time: Quack, Tweet, Coo
Ages 18-36 months (parent participation)

Listen to different bird calls and meet friendly feathered friends.

Toddlers and parents/caregivers enjoy some special time together as they socialize with other youngsters are learn about nature. Each class focuses on a different science theme and includes live animal guests, art projects, trail walks, stories and more. Limited to 8 participants with ONE adult per child. No siblings except babies staying in infant seats.

Nutty Squirrels

What do squirrels do to get ready for winter? Learn some interesting facts and squirrels in this fun class. Enjoy a squirrel story, pet live chinchilla (a cute rodent just like squirrels) make a craft, and walk APEC’s forest trail in search of squirrels, dreys and acorns.

Star Gazing Wonders – Astronomy Night

Winter Solstice Star Celebration
Adults, children ages 9 and up

Seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich will lead each of these interactive astronomy programs. Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, fun and games followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

December 16 Sky Highlights

The main sky highlights for this month would be observing the constellation Orion consisting of the red giant star Betelgeuse and blue giant Rigel. Also, we will see the Great Orion Nebula. We will locate the open cluster of the Plieades and observe the faint Andromeda galaxy. This month we will run our winter solstice star party as well. Everyone is invited to bring their telescopes and binoculars as we serve snacks, refreshments, and play games as well. It is a fun and rewarding night for all to enjoy.

Alley ECOclub: Winter Wilderness Skills
Ages 8-12

Imagine a plane crashing in the tundra… amazingly you survive the crash, but can you survive the tundra? Come join us to learn essential survivals skills like helpful and harmful plant identification, water purification, and shelter building. Participants will learn techniques used by Native Americans to live off of the land we’re on today, and practice those skills themselves. Snack included. Limited to 8 participants.

Winter Wildlife

How do local animals survive the harsh winter weather? Learn about physical and behavioral adaptations of forest mammals, birds and reptiles. Interactive activities, science-themed children’s literature and a craft will be included in each class. Ages 3 to 5 limited to 8 participants. Ages 6-7 limited to 12 participants.

Animal Care Club

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program teaches children about the unique job of an animal caretaker. Children will learn about the needs of APEC’s animals, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. DIY pocket animal and wintertime bird feeder included. Ages 6-7
