Registration Information

Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2017 begins on June 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

Think Tank - Rainbows and Sun Dogs
Ages 7-10

Let’s see how many ways light can play with color. We’ll make colors glow, shimmer, flip, and even climb. Bring as many mirrored objects as you can find from home and we try to make the brightest rainbow! Materials included. Limited to 8 participants.

Stargazing Wonders – Astronomy Night June
Adults, children ages 9 and up

One of the longest running astronomy programs in the city led by seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 15 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

Highlights for the June skies
In the June skies is the peak month for the largest planet in the solar system Jupiter because it is closest to the Earth, and be high in the sky for all to view its belts and zones and the 4 Galalean moons. We will observe the red giant star Arcturus in the constellation Bootes and we should begin to see the brilliant first summer star Vega, and the best double star in Cygnus Albireo. We should be able to see the moon and all its craters as well.

Turnip the Beet: “Melon-cholic” Mood
Ages 8-11

Get ready to plant, pick, study, and maybe even taste some strange and unusual summer melon species. Out in the park we will learn to identify local melon plants. While we work in our greenhouse we’ll listen to the blues to get in a sweet, soulful, melon-choly mood. Students will take home fresh melon from the harvest they pick. During this gardening club tweens can build agriculturalist, survivalist, and naturalist skills while working on environmental stewardship projects in the park. During each session we will garden in the APEC greenhouse to the “beet” of musical genres from classical to pop, from hip-hop to bebop. Along the way, we’ll learn what plants need, and why we need them. Sign up online to join.

Animal Care Trainee
Ages 8-10**

Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program introduces children to the unique responsibility of being an animal caretaker. Participants will learn about the needs of our animal ambassadors, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. Also, children will be able to make a healthy snack for one of the many animals that call APEC home! Limited to 8 participants. **Because participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee, students over the age of 10 may be able to take Animal Care Trainee under special circumstances (Contact Zachary at Ext. 204 for further assistance).

Young Chefs – Happy 4th of July!

Little Cooks: Tutti Frutti Sushi
Ages 5-7

Ever want to learn how to make sushi like professional? Come take our sushi class, but learn with fruit instead of fish! We’ll use sweet, seasonal fruits like melons, berries, peaches, and cucumbers. We’ll slice, we’ll dice, and we’ll roll it all up! Don’t forget about the animal of the day: get ready to pet a mysterious aquatic animal. Honey and rice paper may be used as decoration. For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a Young Chef, here’s something just for you. APEC Little Cooks will have fun learning about an animal, and then help make a delicious snack to compliment what they’ve learned. All materials included. Limited to 8 participants.

Vet Tech 101
Ages 10-13**

Come join us to learn about animal health basics. During the class we will practice conducting animal check-ups, handling live animals, and studying animal anatomy. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears, our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keeping some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Pocket magnifiers included. Limited to 6 participants. **Because participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, students over the age of 13 may be able to take Vet Tech 101 under special circumstances (Contact Zachary at Ext. 204 for further assistance).

Think Tank Hidden Gems
Ages 7-10

Ever wondered what makes a ruby red or a diamond crystal clear? Come experiment with minerals from glittering gemstones to shining metals. At the end of the program you can pick out a gemstone from APEC’s collection to take home with you. Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled, hands on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentations. Watch things bubble, pop, move, and fizz, change, spread, grow and twist. Join us in answering the question “What happens if....” Limited to 8 participants.

Advanced Animal Care Trainee
Ages 10-13**

Animal Care Series These dynamic, experience-based classes are designed to be taken again and again. Come train with our animal ambassadors this month! Have you ever wondered what your pet was thinking, or whether or not the fly on the wall could feel emotions like we do? We’re taking animal care to a whole new level as we study APEC animals’ species-specific behavior. We’ll practice techniques that help us better connect to birds, reptiles, and small mammals, and give their lives more purpose and joy. Learn more about animal needs that go beyond water, food, and a clean shelter. Help care for our animals and all their quirks by learning how to train them, engage them, pamper them, and supplement their diets. Participate in a fun craft that will be used for the enrichment of one of our many animal ambassadors! Limited to 8 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee (Please do not register if you have not participated in Animal Care Trainee; contact Zachary at Ext. 204 for further assistance).

Little Cooks: Undersea BBQ
Ages 5-7

We can’t build a fire pit in the building, but that won’t stop us from having asummer barbeque! Come get creative as we make ourselves some underwater animals using foods you find at a BBQ. We’ll craft our critters with certified humane hot dogs, tomatoes, cheese, olives, mustard, and more. We will meet Bubba, a turtle that lives under the sea (or at least under the bay)! For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a Young Chef, here’s something just for you. Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15**

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinary Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Stethoscopes included. Vet Tech 301
Ages 14-18**

Come gain key animal care and science skills from a licensed Veterinary Technician. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques to perform teddy bear surgeries and in-depth animal examinations. We’ll trouble shoot various animal emergencies and conditions, going beyond the standard check-up to emergency care. Whether you are an aspiring Doctor, Nurse, Vet, or Vet Tech, or you just love animals and science, you will leave this program with many practical animal care know-hows. Discovering Bugs! Calling all Junior Entomologists
Ages 7 – 12

Join us for an interactive workshop led by professional entomologist. Put on your lab coat and step into our “lab” to meet some special creatures up close and learn their importance in nature. Visit insect experiment stations and make some cool observations. Following a presentation, children will participate in a Who’s Bugging You game show. Limited to 40 participants. “Insect” snack included. Each junior entomologist will receive a hard covered copy of Discovering Bugs by Kelly Gauthier.
