Registration Information

Registration Policy:

Pre-registration is required for all programs.


Registration for Fall 2017 begins on June 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

APEC is only able to accept in person or phone registrations Monday - Friday. You can register online at any time.

Please pay careful attention to the age range of the program you are registering for. Program fees are non-refundable. In the event that you register your child for a class that is not age appropriate, we will contact you to discuss transferring your child to an age appropriate program or hold the credit for a future class.



Payment:

If registering by phone or online, you must pay by credit card. If you are registering in person, we prefer payment by cash or check (payable to APEC).



Waiting List:

If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put your name on the waiting list online. Additional classes may be added. You will be notified if that occurs.



Missed Classes:

No refunds or credits will be given for any programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the switch of names.



Make-up Policy:

A make-up session is only offered for children attending multi-session programs during the regular school year. Only ONE make-up program is available, regardless of how many classes a child misses. At the start of the semester, parents will be given a handout with the make-up class date. In order to attend the make-up session, you must notify the Early Childhood Coordinator at (718) 229-4000 ext. 207 to sign up for the class. Notification is required so adequate staff and materials are prepared. Make-up classes are not available for summer programs.



Age Requirement:

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the month that he/she begins that program. All programs are drop-off unless otherwise noted. Participants in drop off classes must be able to use the bathroom independently .



Trial Classes:

APEC does not offer trial classes. Try one of our one-time weekend programs! They are an accurate representation of how we run our weekly programs.

Science in the Park: Science in the Woods
Age 7-11

During four Saturdays in June, from 1:00-2:30 PM. Located in Alley Pond Park by Springfield Blvd and 76th near the playground and restroom.

Science in the Park: Science in the Bay
Age 7 -11

Advanced Animal Care Trainee
Ages 10-13**

Have you ever wondered what your pet was thinking, or whether or not the fly on the wall could feel emotions like we do? We’re taking animal care to a whole new level as we study APEC animals’ species-specific behavior. We’ll practice techniques that help us better connect to birds, reptiles, and small mammals, and give their lives more purpose and joy. Learn more about animal needs that go beyond water, food, and a clean shelter. Help care for our animals and all their quirks by learning how to train them, engage them, pamper them, and supplement their diets. Craft included. Limited to 8 participants.

APEC Adventure Time – Pond Play
Ages 18-36 months (parent participation)

Explore pond plants and animals in this fun science class for little ones. Toddlers and parents/caregivers enjoy some special time together as they socialize with other youngsters are learn about nature. Each class focuses on a different science theme and includes live animal guests, art projects, trail walks, stories and more. Limited to 8 participants with ONE adult per child. No siblings except babies staying in infant seats.

Stargazing Wonders – Astronomy Night May
Adults, children ages 9 and up

One of the longest running astronomy programs in the city led by seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 15 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult). Highlights for the May skies Ursa major stalks high across the northern sky. Once we locate the big dipper we follow a line to the next major star the red giant in Arcturus, in the constellation Bootes, and we keep following the sky to the blue brilliant star Spica in the constellation Virgo the home of 2500 galaxies. We should be able to observe the evening star Venus and see the giant planet Jupiter on the eastern horizon. We will observe the moon as well. (rain date May 26)

World Environment Day

World Wildlife with Animal Embassy
Adults, and Children ages 5 and up

Animal Embassy will take families on a journey around the globe with incredible live Animal Ambassadors! We will explore their diverse habitats and discuss some of the conservation issues and challenges they face. Animal Ambassadors will include animals such as a Eurasian Eagle Owl or an Eclectus Parrot, a Solomon Islands Monkey- Tailed Skink, a South American Milk Snake or Australian Green Tree Python, a Red Foot Tortoise, and an African Bullfrog or a New Caledonian Giant Gecko. For the softer side of nature, we’ll learn about a domestic Rabbit or African Crested Porcupine. Animal Embassy enables people of all ages to connect with the natural world with this unforgettable, interactive live animal presentation!

Concert for the Environment Featuring the band: Gathering Time
Adults, and children ages 10 and up

Finish off World Environment Day with a folk-rock celebration! Gathering Time was voted best band runner-up (and top folk band) in the 2011 Long Island Press readers' poll, Gathering Time is like a high-energy Peter, Paul & Mary or a co-ed Crosby, Stills & Nash, with various parts of The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles and America mixed in; a head-turning folk-rock harmony trio described recently as "getting a whole beehive-full of buzz" on the northeast regional folk scene.

Vet Tech 201
Ages 11-15**

Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinarian Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heartrates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. Stethoscopes and bandages included. Limited to 6 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201 (Please do not register if you have not participated in Vet Tech 101; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Vet Tech 301
Ages 14-18**

Come gain key animal care and science skills from a licensed Veterinarian Technician. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques to perform teddy bear surgeries and in-depth animal examinations. We’ll trouble shoot various animal emergencies and conditions, going beyond the standard check-up to emergency care. Whether you are an aspiring Doctor, Nurse, Vet, or Vet Tech, or you just love animals and science, you will leave this program with many practical animal care know-hows. Limited to 6 participants. **Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in Vet Tech 101, and Vet Tech 201 classes are required to qualify for Vet Tech 301 (Please do not register if you have not participated in one or more of both of these programs; contact Katie at Ext. 202 for further assistance).

Toddler Tales- The Very Busy Bee
Ages 3 - 4 (parent participation)

Enjoy this great pop-up book about summer insects and meet live crawling critters. Encourage your child’s love of reading by listening to a nature related story especially chosen for our littlest nature lovers. Create a nature craft, meet some of APEC’s animals and enjoy a nature walk. Limited to 8 participants and ONE adult per child.

Beautiful Butterflies
Ages 5-7

Learn about the amazing life cycle of butterflies with colorful photos, an engaging book and live specimens! Compare butterfly anatomy with an assortment of other insect guests and take a nature walk looking for local butterfly species. Children will also make a butterfly box to care for a live butterfly larvae to take home, observe and release into nature. Limited to 8 participants.

Snake, Rattle, and Roll!
Age 5-7

Come celebrate summer with Kaa, the Ball Python. We’ll learn why she makes the shapes she does when she is shaking and rolling, and whether or not a snake’s rattle is really the best way to tell if she’s upset. Then we’ll do some shaking and rolling of our own as we make our own vegan iced cream with coconut cream. Unbleached sugar will be used as a sweetener.

Highlights for the June skies
In the June skies is the peak month for the largest planet in the solar system Jupiter because it is closest to the Earth, and be high in the sky for all to view its belts and zones and the 4 Galalean moons. We will observe the red giant star Arcturus in the constellation Bootes and we should begin to see the brilliant first summer star Vega, and the best double star in Cygnus Albireo. We should be able to see the moon and all its craters as well.
