Pre-registration is required for all programs. If registering in person, you may pay by cash, check (payable to APEC), or credit card (Visa, M/C orex). If registering by phone, you must pay by credit card.

Waiting List:


If it appears that you will be closed out of a particular class, please put you name on a waiting list. Additional classes may be formed. You will be notified if that occurs.

Missed Classes:



No refunds or credits will be given for one-time programs. You may give your spot to another child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know of the switch of names.

Pet Show
Ages 5-6

What happens when a boy brings a very unusual pet to a pet show? We will read Ezra Jack Keats’ funny story and have a pet show of our own with our own stuffed animals. This program includes games, songs, a snack, a craft, live animals and a nature walk (weather permitting)

Native Americans
Ages 3-4

Who lived here before we did? What did they eat? What kind of houses did they live in? What kind of games did their children play?

The children will learn about the original inhabitants of Queens, the Native Americans.
We will see and touch actual artifacts. This program includes games, songs, a snack, a craft, live animals and a nature walk (weather permitting).

Participants must be toilet trained.

Young Discoverers Club – Global Warming
Ages 8-12

What is global warming and who is causing it? These are some of the things we will explore in this program. Students will discuss the evidence for global warming and carry out experiments that explore the impacts of global warming on the earth. Calling all scientists!!

Put on your thinking caps and join us as we answer important environmental questions with fun and easy experiments. Learn about your environment through studies and tests, some can be done with simple household supplies.

Birds come in many different shapes, sizes and colors! These variations are adaptations to their environment. Come learn why adaptations are important for birds. Using experiments we will see how wonderfully birds are designed to live and feed where they do. You will realize that being called a bird brain is a compliment after this class is through!

During the first class they will practice their newly acquired skills, taking photographs during a nature walk on APEC's trails. What makes a pond a pond? Who lives there? How healthy is our pond? Discoverers will get a chance to explore our pond and its occupants using binoculars, magnifying glasses and even microscopes to figure out what makes this thriving ecosystem so special. Come look below the surface and see beyond the pond scum!

Ages 6-11

Take a walk on the wild side at APEC. You never know what wildlife you might find when we hike the trails of Alley Pond Park. Explore parts of the park rarely seen and hike trails that are seldom used. Blaze trails as we investigate the spring wonders of the park. Walk will be held rain or shine, so be sure to dress appropriately (and be prepared to get dirty) and wear comfortable shoes. Be sure to spray with bug spray before coming. In case of severe weather, program will run indoors. Snacks will be served when we return to APEC.

Calling all camera enthusiasts! Come learn the ins and outs of using a digital camera. Learn how to use your digital camera effectively, improving your shots by understanding aspects, composition and lighting. In participating in this class you will learn how to achieve the best photographs with the camera that you own! During the first class photographers will learn and then practice newly acquired skills, taking photographs during a nature walk on APEC’s trails. Each child’s pictures will be assessed during the first class to determine which 10 pictures are print worthy. During the second class, these pictures will be evaluated by the instructor, and participants will create a frame to mount their favorite picture.

Please note - all participants are required to bring their own digital camera, charged battery for your camera, as well as a memory card for this program. Printing the photographs will be the responsibility of the parent in between the two classes; APEC will not be printing the photographs
