Frogs and Polliwogs

What is a polliwog anyway? Children learn the answer to this question and many more while observing and handling real frogs! Participants discover how frogs eat and move and study their fascinating life cycle. Program includes games, a craft, a snack and hike in search of frog eggs and tadpoles.

Children’s Nature Photography

Children will be introduced to the basics of composition and nature photography rules while using disposable cameras.  During the first class they will practice their newly acquired skills, taking photographs during a nature walk on APEC’s trails.  During the second class the children will create frames to mount their favorite pictures.  Film developing and all materials included.  Limited to 10  participants.

High School Internships

Summer Field Biology High School Internship

APEC is offering a Summer Internship for entering High School sophomores, juniors and seniors.  Over the months of July and August our interns will explore the many habitats and ecosystems of one of New York City’s most treasured parks.  Classes will meet on Thursdays at variety of different locations around our 635 acre park with Alley Pond Environmental Center being the main location to observe and document animals, plants and geological features of each site and research information on these observations to create a comprehensible local field guide of Alley Pond Park.  Please call for more information and our application or

DECEMBER CLASSES WILL BE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 14TH BEGINNING AT 9:30

AM IN PERSON ONLY.  REGISTRATION WILL BE FOR APEC MEMBERS ONLY UNTIL 1 PM

If you are registering for Wee Sprouts, Toddler Time, Fledglings, or Sunny Bunnies for July and August, please call on Friday, June 13th, to check for availability as continuing students are permitted to register early.

Registration for September, October, November and December classes is not continuous for current students. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.   

A registration deposit of $25 will be required at registration with the balance of the fee due on
Friday August 15th.  

You may pay by cash, check (payable to APEC) or credit card.
(Visa, M/C or Amex). If registering by phone, you must pay by credit card.

Waiting List

If it appears that you will be closed out of particular class, please put your name on a waiting list.

Additional classes may be formed on another day. You will be called if this occurs.

Missed Classes

No refunds or credits will be given for one-time programs. You may give your spot to another

child if the child is the appropriate age for the program. Please phone APEC to let us know the

switch of names.

Make-ups are allowed for multi-session programs only if the front registration desk is notified

before your child is noted as absent. Only TWO make-ups are allowed per SESSION. Sunny

Bunnies participants are allowed three make-ups.

Your child MUST reach the required age for a particular program either before or during the

 month that he/she begins that program. ALL PROGRAMS ARE DROP-OFF UNLESS

Astronomy Programs with Mark Freilich

Four separate but equally great sessions!  Understand and appreciate the mystery and beauty of the universe with astronomer Mark Freilich.  Learn about the Hercules Cluster, spring constellations, planets, deep space objects, the Northern Cross, and the Milky Way.  These programs comprise an indoor lecture on basic astronomy and outdoor viewing with a professional telescope.  Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes. 

Experience different and exciting viewings at each event!

 forecast calls for rain. 


WATERCOLOR WORKSHOPS

If you have always wanted to paint in watercolor, this could be your time to learn with award-winning artist Diane Lieberman.  Each workshop focuses on technique and composition, and includes a demonstration and critique.  For the beginner and advanced painter!  Attention will be paid to each student’s development of individual style and expression. Limit is 14 participants per session. 

Please ask for a supply list when registering.  Purchase of appropriate supplies prior to first workshop is mandatory. 

Fee: free for members, $5 non-members

Crafts, flower pressing, and other activities will be available for children ages 5 years old and up.

 


HEALTHY EATING, HEALTHY PLANET

It’s the same thing

Just as mankind’s activity is having an impact on our natural environment, so to, do we see rapid changes in our “food environment”, changes for which we are ill prepared. Lou Harson, an experienced psychotherapist and holistic health counselor, will provide information about the parallel threats to our well-being and that of our precious planet, as well as some key guidelines for good nutrition. His talk will include a cooking demonstration.

Try out some new, easy to prepare recipes that will promote your health.  Light refreshments will be served.

Advanced registration is required. Everyone that registers will be entered into a raffle to receive a free
                                                           copy of the book “Greens Glorious Greens!”  

 

Bird Walk at Jones Beach
Saturday, September 20

Meet at APEC 8:00 AM or Jones Beach Coast Guard Station 8:30 AM

FEE: free

Bring binoculars and field guides to Jones Beach for a morning of bird watching with Larry Plotnick.  Look for migratory birds
in this tranquil marine environment.  Dress appropriately for weather.  Moderate walking is required.
 

NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY FESTIVAL at APEC
Saturday, September 27

Please join us for this festival to commemorate our country’s coastal bays, sounds, and lagoons-the magnificent
places where rivers meet the seas.  APEC will be celebrating our own local estuary Little Neck Bay. 
This bay provides a variety of sea life with habitat, as well as recreational opportunities for the residents of Queens. 

The festival will feature educational exhibits and interactive booths from various organizations and neighborhood groups.   Bring the whole family to enjoy FREE boat rides, activities, entertainment, hands-on demonstrations,
crafts, and fun games!

Your Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts can experience nature for themselves through
 these exciting, hands-on programs at APEC. 
 

General Program

This one-hour program includes a guided nature walk and a live animal presentation. 
 See and touch the animals!

Fee: $60 (up to 15 participants)

        $4 each additional participant  

Badge Program

This hour and a half program is designed to fill specific badge requirements.

APEC also offers assistance for scouts working on their Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project
